TRAI issues its recommendations on cloud services after a multistage consultation process

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on September 14, 2020 has issued the press release on cloud services after a multistage consultation process. The authorities have given their input on initial seeding of the industry body, the membership fee, the governance structure etc after receiving recommendations from the various stakeholders. 

The following features have been mentioned: 

• A regulatory framework shall be formulated where in three steps shall be provided in the industry body, namely:

1. An ad-hoc body shall be formulated to frame the broad rules in the industry.

2. Election procedure to choose such body. 

3. The body shall function like a normal industry-led body. 

• The formulated industry body shall be registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. 

• The cloud services shall initially be limited to the cloud service providers for infrastructure and Platform as service already providing these services in India. 

• The Cloud service provider shall be a member of the industry body. The infrastructure shall not be provided by the telecom regulators to all the cloud service providers who are not a member of the industry. 

• The industry body shall review the experience and shall provide the review to the board after two years of its functioning.
