FSSAI issues directions relating to limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on September 13, 2021 has issued directions regarding operationalisation of Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Amendment Regulations, 2021 relating to limit of naturally occurring formaldehyde in freshwater and marine fish.

In Regulation 2.6.2 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011 which specifies “Limit of Formaldehyde”, has been inserted, namely: -

The amount of naturally occurring formaldehyde shall not exceed the limit for different species of fish as mentioned below: -

• Group 1 (Marine) 

All finfishes 4.0

• Group - II (Freshwater Origin) 4.0

• Group -III (Marine) 

Lizard fishes and any other marine fishes not covered under Group I 8.0 

• Group -IV (Frozen Stored marine fish products) 

All frozen stored marine fish products 100
